WHITE SPOT LESIONS ON YOUR TEETH! WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW DO WE TREAT THEM?
Determining why these lesions exist is necessary for successful treatment and improvement in their appearance.
Lets discuss the cause of White Spot Lesions and what we can do to eliminate, or reduce, their appearance.
Although multifactorial, the most common cause associated with White Spot Lesions are typically one of these listed below:
- Demineralization
- Hypomineralization or Hypomaturation
- Hypoplasia
- Orthodontic Therapy Demineralization
- Flourosis
It is imperative to determine the cause of the White Spot Lesion in order to establish an appropriate and effective treatment plan.
When the White Spot Lesion is an esthetic concern, teeth whitening should be considered. This may be able to successfully blend the lesion in with the natural dentition.
Minimally invasive treatment options may, at times, not be sufficient in eliminating or reducing the White Spot Lesion. In such cases, restorative therapy is recommended. This may include, but is not limited to:
- Remineralization
- Tooth Whitening
- Microabrasion
- Resin Infiltration or Bonding
- Porcelain Veneers or Crowns
These options may be used to either eliminate or mask the White Spot Lesion.
Whenever possible, try to prevent breakdown of these lesions. If advanced and cavitated, these may actually become carious lesions, or cavities. Avoiding foods high in acidic and sugar content, as well as committing to optimal home and professional care, including the use of regular flouride immersion, will most certainly assist in the prevention of White Spot Lesion progression and breakdown.
