NEWS: HUMAN SALIVA TESTS POSITIVE FOR ZIKA VIRUS, AGAIN!

The discovery heightens concerns about the potential for human-to-human transmission via saliva!

Further confirming the presence of the Zika virus in human saliva, as was previously reported last July in the Journal of Clinical Virology, and by researchers in Brazil's Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, active organisms were detected in salivary samples of an Italian patient who had recently traveled to the Dominican Republic.

As reported recently in Eurosurveillance, an Italian team has also found evidence of  live Zika virus in saliva samples.  The infected Italian woman had returned from  the Dominican Republic before falling sick in January of this year. The virus was detected six days after symptom onset.  And further testing of the saliva, blood, and urine found that prolonged viral shedding was detected, mainly from urine and saliva, for 29 days post symptom onset.

This evidence confirms the need for advances in salivary testing while also raises concerns and questions regarding the possible risk of salivary transmission.

Once again, we have noted the importance of saliva in various aspects of oral and systemic health and research.  Lets stay tuned for further developments!
