DENTAL IMPLANT, WHAT ARE THE PARTS THAT MAKE IT U

Among all the tooth replacement options dentistry offers today, the dental implant is considered the standard of care and, where indicated, the best solution for replacing a missing tooth.

The success rate of a dental implant is over 95%.  It is a spectacular choice and allows for the restoration of natural function, health, and beauty of a smile.  The main advantages associated with a dental implant used a single tooth replacement can be described in a few, but very significant, statements.  Read below to learn more:

  • A Dental Implant replaces a natural tooth without relying on adjacent teeth for support.
  • A Dental Implant can be treated as  single tooth.
  • A Dental Implant preserves the underlying and supporting bone.
  • A Dental Implant can be cleansed and flossed like a natural tooth.
  • A Dental Implant may fail without affecting adjacent teeth.
  • A Dental Implant looks like and functions like a natural tooth.
  • A Dental Implant will not decay or get cavities.
  • A Dental Implant enables the patient to decide against a traditional bridge or removable prosthesis when replacing one or multiple adjacent teeth.

Now that we understand why dental implants are such wonderful restorations, lets learn about what makes them up.  What exactly is a dental implant composed of?  Generally speaking, a dental implant is made up of three separate and very important parts, or components.  These include, but are not limited to:

  • The Dental Implant, or fixture
  • The Implant Abutment, or that part which attaches to the underlying fixture
  • The Dental Implant Crown, or cap.

The dental implant (fixture) is that part which replaces the natural root.  It is surgically placed into a preplanned position and allowed to integrate ( heal ) with the surrounding bone over three months in preparation for the next step in the process.

The implant abutment ( metal or zirconia component ) is screwed into the integrated underlying implant fixture as a base upon which the final crown will be cemented or screwed into. This component is attached to the fixture once the three month integration phase has passed.

Finally, the final part consists of the naturally appearing crown.  This cap is custom made to mimic the natural contour, size, form, shade and position previoiusly held by the natural tooth.  It is either cemented over or screwed into the previously mentioned abutment.

Together, these three components restore the missing tooth beautifully and successfully for several years to come.  This excellent option enables optimal function, esthetics, and health to be returned to the smile.  Dental implants have revolutionized the oral health industry and will prove to continue providing us with a lifetime of smile innovations.

Together, we can create that beautiful smile for YOU!  Visit us to learn how we can assist you in attaining that "Smile You'd Be Proud To Wear...ANYWHERE!"
