DENTAL IMPLANTS, AN OPTION IN SMILE RECONTSTRUCTION V

Dental Implants...Are there different types?

Welcome Back  to the Vth of our DENTAL IMPLANTS...AN OPTION IN SMILE RECONSTRUCTION series.

The American Dental Association has declared two different types of dental implants safe for insertion and use.  These include:

1. Endosteal Implant

2. Subperiosteal Implant

The endosteal implant is most like tooth roots, extending into the jawbone.  A sufficient  amount and quality of bone is necessary to retain this type of dental implant.  After successful placement, the gum tissue is then placed over or around the dental implant, sutured in place, and then the implant allowed to heal for a period of three to six months.  This healing period allows for the implant to integrate, or fuse, to the surrounding bone.  Once integrated, a post is attached to the dental implant in preparation for the fabrication of new crowns, bridges, or dentures.  These restorations are finally cemented or screwed into the dental implant system, completing the restorative process.

The subperiosteal implant is usually used when sufficient bone is unavailable to support the endosteal implant.  This type of implant is a metal frame placed on the jawbone beneath the gums.  As the gum tissue heals, the underlying implant attaches to the surrounding bone.  Posts are later attached to the frame as they protrude through the gums.  And, to finally complete the restorative process, the final crowns, bridges, or dentures are mounted to the posts.

Can bone be added to the jaw bone when there simply isn't enough to support a dental implant?

YES!  Some studies suggest that bone augmentation is, in may cases, beneficial in allowing deficient jaw bone to accept dental implants successfully.  Bone substitutes, either natural or synthetic, can be placed under the gums.  These materials have the potential to stimulate new bone growth over a period of six to twelve weeks.
