When can dental bonding be chosen over porcelain veneers?  Lets find out!

In dentistry, various options are available, at times, to resolve the same issue or complaint.  In this case, lets discuss when it would be appropriate to select dental bonding, over porcelain veneers, to restore minor to moderately visible esthetic defects in your smile.

The presence of minor to moderate wear, chipping. darkening of front teeth, natural variations in the enamel shape or form, and even changes of position may enable you to consider accepting dental bonding as an alternative to porcelain veneers to restore your smile.  Porcelain veneers, when properly made and restored, are gorgeous, long lasting, and predictable. When compared to dental bonding they are also more costly to you and to me as your dentist.  However, this DOES NOT MATTER when discussing the best option for your smile.  What you need to do is VALUE your smile enough to want to select the most ideal option whenever indicated and possible.

For now, lets concentrate on when to choose dental bonding as a transitional or permanent restoration.  Minor changes in your smile appearance and function may occur over time due to wear and tear, an accident, or the influence of traumatic bites or habits.  These may include chips, fractures, changes in shade, shifting of teeth, and alterations in the length of your teeth. Dental bonding is an option that requires very little chair time, less invasive tooth preparation, and a more affordable commitment.  Additionally, local anesthesia often times would not be necessary and same day treatment completion is possible.  Restoring the smile's minor changes is an art form that requires understanding of the natural and ideal proportions of your smile.  A restorative dentist like me is trained to recognize the changes and to envision the ideal smile's restoration within the confines of your face and lips.  Once defined, the details of this new vision are carefully sculpted using resin or tooth colored composites specifically selected for you.  This procedure requires one dental visit and often times renews my patients' self image in a dramatic way.  

When not prepared to choose  more costly restorations such as porcelain veneers, or if not certain these are the right option for you at this time, take advantage of dental bondings as a transitional material until you ARE ready for the beauty and more predictable porcelain selections.  As a cosmetic dentist experienced in smile restoration it is imperative to also understand when dental bonding CANNOT be used to restore your smile. Restorative dentistry is both a science and an art, designed to restore natural, harmonious, and long lasting health to your smile.  This can, at times, be done with dental bonding and other times cannot.
